Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
The Schomburg Center in Harlem, a branch of the New York Public Library, is the world's foremost archive of Black literature, art, and history. Founded on the collection of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg — an Afro-Puerto Rican bibliophile who spent his life collecting evidence of Black civilization — it houses over 11 million items including manuscripts by Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and W.E.B. Du Bois.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that African American cultural production was derivative. Jazz, blues, and hip-hop are among America's only original art forms.
