Black Panther Party National Headquarters Site

Oakland, CA
Civil Rights Movement

The original headquarters of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, founded in Oakland in October 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. The Panthers developed the most sophisticated revolutionary program in American history: armed self-defense patrols, free breakfast for children (feeding 20,000+ daily before federal school lunch legislation), free health clinics, and legal aid offices. Their Ten-Point Program was a comprehensive political platform rooted in the Great Migration experience — the children and grandchildren of Southern migrants who arrived in Oakland during WWII and found that Northern cities offered segregation without Jim Crow's explicit name.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
