Golden Gate National Recreation Area
San Francisco, CA
Golden Gate National Recreation Area encompasses Alcatraz Island, a site of Native American occupation and a federal prison. It also includes the Presidio of San Francisco, a former military post where African American Buffalo Soldiers served, contributing to the nation's defense and, indirectly, to the broader Civil Rights Movement.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that Black Americans were not trusted to fight for the country. They fought — and were still denied the rights they defended.
