Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial

Concord, CA
Jim Crow

This memorial commemorates the Port Chicago disaster, where in 1944, a massive explosion at the naval ammunition depot killed 320 sailors and civilians, two-thirds of whom were African American. The ensuing mutiny trial highlighted racial discrimination in the military.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that Black Americans were not trusted to fight for the country. They fought — and were still denied the rights they defended.
