Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church
The church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. served as pastor from 1954 to 1960, Dexter Avenue Baptist Church was the organizational center of the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955–56. The basement served as a war room for boycott strategy meetings. Now a National Historic Landmark, its mural of the Civil Rights movement painted by John Feagin makes it one of the most historically resonant church spaces in America.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that civil rights were granted by government. They were extracted through sustained, organized sacrifice.
