Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church

Charleston, SC
Slavery

Founded in 1816, Mother Emanuel is the oldest AME church in the South and one of the oldest Black congregations in the United States. A site of Denmark Vesey's 1822 freedom conspiracy and the 2015 racially-motivated massacre of nine worshippers by a white supremacist, it stands as a continuous testament to Black faith, resistance, and resilience.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that the Black church was only spiritual. These buildings were courtrooms, schools, organizing halls, and sanctuaries.
