Historical Event

Timbuktu as center of Islamic scholarship

From the 13th through 16th centuries, Timbuktu — located in present-day Mali — was home to the Sankore Madrasah and the University of Timbuktu, attracting over 25,000 students and housing one of the world's great manuscript libraries, with an estimated 700,000 surviving texts on theology, astronomy, mathematics, and law.

Why This Matters

Timbuktu's scholarly legacy proves that African intellectual life was rich, literate, and globally connected — directly challenging the racist mythology that Africans had no written history or civilizational achievement before European arrival.
