Historical Figure
Sundiata Keita
1217 – 1255
Sundiata Keita was the founder and first emperor of the Mali Empire. Born into the Keita clan of the Mandinka people, he overcame childhood illness and exile to unite the West African clans, defeat the Sosso king Sumanguru Kante at the Battle of Kirina (1235), and establish both the Mali Empire and the Kouroukan Fouga — one of history's earliest constitutional charters.
