Historical Event
Mali Empire founded by Sundiata Keita
Around 1235 CE, Sundiata Keita, a Mandinka prince, united the clans of West Africa and defeated the Sosso king Sumanguru Kante at the Battle of Kirina, founding the Mali Empire. The empire would grow to control territory across much of West Africa, becoming the largest and wealthiest empire of its time.
Why This Matters
Sundiata's story — preserved by griots for 800 years — is one of Africa's foundational epics, connecting oral tradition, political philosophy, and the origins of governance principles that influenced the Kouroukan Fouga charter.
