Songhai Empire under Askia Mohammed

After overthrowing the Sunni dynasty in 1493, Askia Mohammed the Great transformed the Songhai Empire into a model of Islamic governance, standardizing weights and measures, building schools, and expanding Timbuktu as a center of learning. His empire stretched over 1.4 million square kilometers.

Why This Matters

Askia Mohammed's reign represents the pinnacle of precolonial African statecraft — a meritocratic, literate, and legally sophisticated empire whose destruction by Moroccan invasion in 1591 redirected West African history toward vulnerability and enslavement.
