Historical Event
Ghana Empire rises (c. 300 CE)
The Ghana Empire, one of West Africa's earliest great states, emerged around 300 CE in the region between the Senegal and Niger rivers. It grew wealthy controlling the trans-Saharan gold and salt trade, becoming a sophisticated kingdom with a professional army and complex administration.
Why This Matters
The Ghana Empire demonstrates that Black Africans built advanced, self-governing civilizations centuries before European contact — a direct counter to narratives of African primitivism that were later used to justify enslavement.
