Memorial to Enslaved People (Plantation - Prosperity and Nightmare)

Lisbon, Portugal, Portugal
Slavery

Plantation - Prosperity and Nightmare, by Angolan artist Kiluanji Kia Henda, is Portugal's first public memorial to victims of the slave trade. Selected through a public vote in 2019-2020 following a proposal by the Afro-descendant association Djass, the work depicts a scorched plantation of 540 black-aluminum sugar-cane stalks with a circular bench at its center, sited at Campo das Cebolas (Largo José Saramago) near the Casa dos Bicos in Lisbon's historic waterfront -- close to former slave-trade landmarks including Terreiro do Paço and the Casa dos Escravos. Approved as part of Lisbon's 2017-2018 participatory budget, construction has faced repeated delays.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.

Descendant Voice

This site is actively engaged with descendants of those enslaved here.

Enslaved Focus Exhibit

The memorial's design and planned interpretive center are intended to document the history of enslaved Africans trafficked through Lisbon's port.
