Palenque de San Basilio
San Basilio de Palenque, N/A, Colombia
Founded by Benkos Biohó, an escaped Mandinga leader, in the hills near Cartagena in the early 1600s. It is the only fully surviving palenque in the Americas and remains home to the Palenquero creole language.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
