Corbit-Sharp House

Odessa, DE
Freedom and Resistance

This 1770s Georgian home in the Delaware River port town of Odessa, then called Cantwell's Bridge, belonged to a family of Underground Railroad sympathizers and served as a hiding place for at least one enslaved person fleeing north. Odessa's position along the Delaware River and its Quaker-influenced merchant community made it an important waypoint on the route enslaved people traveled from Maryland's Eastern Shore toward Wilmington and Pennsylvania. The house is preserved today as part of Historic Odessa's collection of restored colonial and Federal-era buildings.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
