Birchtown, Nova Scotia
Founded in 1783, Birchtown was the largest free Black settlement in North America at the time of its founding, established by Black Loyalists who had fought for or been promised freedom by the British during the American Revolution. Over 1,200 of its residents departed for Sierra Leone in 1792 after finding conditions intolerable.
Counter-Narrative
