Freetown, Sierra Leone
Founded in 1787 as the Province of Freedom by British abolitionists for resettled Black Loyalists, formerly enslaved people, and Black poor from London, Freetown became the capital of modern Sierra Leone. It is the oldest diaspora return community in Africa and home to the Krio people — descendants of returned slaves from across the Atlantic world.
Counter-Narrative
