Apollo Theater
Opened to Black audiences in 1934, the Apollo Theater in Harlem became the premier showcase for Black musical and comedic talent. Its Amateur Night launched the careers of Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Billie Holiday, Gladys Knight, and Michael Jackson. The Apollo operated as a Black-owned cultural institution outside white entertainment industry gatekeeping, functioning as a community cultural infrastructure parallel to the HBCU and Black Church institutional networks.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that African American cultural production was derivative. Jazz, blues, and hip-hop are among America's only original art forms.
