South Carolina State University
Orangeburg, SC
Founded in 1896 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, SC State is the state's only public HBCU and was the site of the 1968 Orangeburg Massacre, when state police killed three student protesters and wounded 27 others during demonstrations against a segregated bowling alley.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that Black communities lacked investment in learning. HBCUs and freedom schools existed before many white institutions.
