Freedom Monument Sculpture Park

Freedom Monument Sculpture Park

Montgomery, Alabama
Slavery

Built on the banks of the Alabama River — the very waterway that transported enslaved people to Montgomery's auction blocks — this 17-acre outdoor sculpture park explores the lived experience of enslaved people in America. World-class sculptures by artists including Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, Hank Willis Thomas, and others animate an unforgettable journey through history, culminating in the 'Raise Up' monument, a first-of-its-kind national monument honoring the 4 million people enslaved in the United States.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
