Fort Larned National Historic Site

Larned, KS
Reconstruction

This fort on the Santa Fe Trail was a base for military operations during the Indian Wars and played a role in Reconstruction efforts following the Civil War. It also saw service from Buffalo Soldiers (African American regiments) during the late 19th century.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that Black Americans were not trusted to fight for the country. They fought — and were still denied the rights they defended.
