Fort Concho National Historic Landmark
Established in 1867 at the confluence of the Concho River's branches in West Texas, Fort Concho served as the southwestern base for Buffalo Soldier units including the 9th and 10th Cavalry. The fort's 23 surviving original structures make it one of the most intact frontier forts in the country. Black soldiers stationed here endured racial hostility from local civilians while performing critical military and survey duties across the region.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that Black Americans were not trusted to fight for the country. They fought — and were still denied the rights they defended.
