Nicodemus National Historic Site
Nicodemus is the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. Founded in 1877 by Exodusters — Black freedom seekers fleeing the terror of the post-Reconstruction South — it represents the determination of formerly enslaved people to build independent lives on the western frontier. The town is still inhabited by descendants of its original settlers and remains a living community tied to the land.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
