Deadwood National Historic Landmark

Deadwood, SD
Reconstruction

Deadwood, South Dakota — designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961 — was where Black cowboy and rodeo champion Nat Love won the name 'Deadwood Dick' in 1876 by besting every competitor in roping, shooting, and riding contests on July 4th. Love's autobiography, published in 1907, is one of the only first-person accounts of Black cowboy life on the open range. Deadwood represents the broader, often erased presence of Black men and women throughout the Wild West.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
