Whitney Plantation

Wallace, LA
Slavery

The only plantation museum in the United States with an interpretive focus exclusively on the lives of enslaved people, the Whitney Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana uses memorials, artwork, and first-person testimonies from the WPA Slave Narratives to center the enslaved rather than the enslavers. It is one of the most emotionally honest and historically rigorous sites dedicated to the memory of slavery in America.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that enslaved and oppressed people accepted their condition. Every stone here is evidence of refusal.
