Hampton University

Hampton, VA
Reconstruction

Founded in 1868 by the American Missionary Association on the grounds of a former plantation, Hampton University was one of the first institutions to educate formerly enslaved people. Booker T. Washington and other Reconstruction-era leaders trained here. Hampton's museum holds one of the most significant collections of African and African American art in the South.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that segregated education was uniformly inferior. These campuses produced lawyers who dismantled segregation itself.
