Freedmen's Town Historic District (Fourth Ward)
Established by formerly enslaved people after Emancipation, Houston's Fourth Ward was one of the most significant freedpeople communities in the post-Civil War South. Its brick-paved streets, laid by freedpeople themselves, remain intact today. The district housed churches, schools, and Black-owned businesses that sustained the community through Reconstruction and Jim Crow.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that Reconstruction was a failure imposed from outside. It was a flourishing democracy — deliberately destroyed.
