Historical Figure
Stephen Myers
1800 – 1870
Born enslaved in New York State, Stephen Myers became the central organizer of the Underground Railroad in Albany, using his home on Livingston Avenue as the headquarters of the Albany Vigilance Committee throughout the 1850s. Myers published newspapers that documented and coordinated aid to hundreds of freedom seekers, and Harriet Tubman is known to have routed some of her rescues through Albany specifically because of his oversight there.
