Mansa Musa I
1280 – 1337
Mansa Musa I was the tenth emperor of the Mali Empire and one of the wealthiest individuals in recorded history. His 1324 pilgrimage to Mecca — with 60,000 attendants and 100 camel-loads of gold — introduced West African civilization to the wider medieval world and caused gold inflation across the Mediterranean for over a decade.
