Kouroukan Fouga — Charter of Kurukan Fuga (1236)

Following his victory at Kirina, Sundiata Keita convened a grand assembly of clan leaders at Kurukan Fuga in 1236 and established the Kouroukan Fouga — a social charter codifying laws governing governance, land rights, social hierarchy, environmental protection, and the status of women and griots. Preserved orally for 800 years, it was recognized by UNESCO in 2009.

Why This Matters

The Kouroukan Fouga predates the Magna Carta by 21 years and the U.S. Constitution by over 550 years — it is one of humanity's earliest constitutional documents, centering African political philosophy as a global contribution to human rights thought.
