Quinta do Relógio (Quinta de Monte Cristo)

Sintra, Portugal, Portugal
Slavery

An 18th-century estate rebuilt in the mid-19th century in Neo-Moorish revival style by Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, nicknamed the 'Count of Monte Cristo' after amassing a fortune trading enslaved people between West Africa and Brazil. Local accounts describe enslaved people being auctioned in front of the main building. Located adjacent to Quinta da Regaleira within the UNESCO-listed Cultural Landscape of Sintra, the palace has stood abandoned for decades.
