Igreja de São Domingos

Lisbon, Portugal, Portugal
Slavery

A Baixa-district church rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, Igreja de São Domingos was, from the 15th century onward, the site where enslaved Africans brought to Lisbon were taken for the compulsory baptism required before sale. Adjoining Rossio Square, the surrounding neighborhood (Largo de São Domingos) has for centuries served as a gathering place for Lisbon's Black community and remains one so today.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that the Black church was only spiritual. These buildings were courtrooms, schools, organizing halls, and sanctuaries.
