Museo Casa de África

Havana, La Habana, Cuba
Slavery

Opened on 6 January 1986 in a colonial building at Obrapía 157 in Old Havana, the Casa de África holds more than 2,000 objects from across the African continent. A significant portion came from the personal ethnographic collection of Cuban scholar Fernando Ortiz, and the museum is especially noted for its materials on Afro-Cuban Santería (Regla de Ocha), the Abakuá society, and the religious and musical traditions Africans carried into Cuban slavery.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that African American cultural production was derivative. Jazz, blues, and hip-hop are among America's only original art forms.
