Museu Afro-Brasileiro (MAFRO)

Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
Slavery

Inaugurated on 7 January 1982, the Museu Afro-Brasileiro (MAFRO) is housed in Salvador's former Faculty of Medicine (UFBA), facing the Terreiro de Jesus in the Pelourinho historic center. Its signature work is the 'Mural dos Orixás,' Argentine-Bahian artist Carybé's 27 cedar panels depicting the deities of Candomblé; the museum also holds Amorim's wood carvings and significant collections documenting Bahia's African-derived religious and cultural life.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that African American cultural production was derivative. Jazz, blues, and hip-hop are among America's only original art forms.
