Linden Place (DeWolf Mansion)
Built in 1810 by George DeWolf, Linden Place was the grandest of several mansions built in Bristol by the DeWolf family, the largest slave-trading dynasty in United States history. Over three generations from 1769 to 1820, the DeWolfs financed roughly 88 voyages that trafficked an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 enslaved Africans, funneling profits into a rum distillery, a bank, an insurance company, and sugar plantations in Cuba. The family continued trading illegally after the 1808 federal ban, evading prosecution through political connections including a favor from President Thomas Jefferson. Linden Place now operates as a historic house museum that directly addresses this legacy.
