Madam Walker Legacy Center

Indianapolis, IN
Jim Crow

Sarah Breedlove, known as Madam C.J. Walker, built a hair care and beauty products empire that made her the first female self-made millionaire in the United States, the daughter of formerly enslaved parents who was born the first of her siblings after emancipation. She moved her company's headquarters to Indianapolis in 1910, and after her death in 1919 her daughter A'Lelia Walker completed this four-story building on Indiana Avenue in 1927, which housed the manufacturing plant, a beauty school, a drugstore, and the 1,500-seat Walker Theatre. For decades the building anchored Indiana Avenue, the center of Indianapolis's Black business, entertainment, and civic life, hosting jazz musicians and community institutions until urban renewal projects displaced much of the surrounding neighborhood in the 1950s and 60s.
