Hotel Theresa

New York, NY
Civil Rights Movement

Opened in 1913 and desegregated in 1940, the Hotel Theresa on West 125th Street became known as the "Waldorf of Harlem," the premier hotel and social hub for Black entertainers, athletes, and political figures excluded from downtown establishments. Joe Louis, Duke Ellington, and Malcolm X, who headquartered his Organization of Afro-American Unity there, all had ties to the building. The hotel drew international attention in 1960 when Fidel Castro moved his delegation there during a UN visit and met with Malcolm X and Nikita Khrushchev in its lobby. The building now operates as an office tower but retains its landmark facade.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that Black economic prosperity was impossible under Jim Crow. These walls prove otherwise.
