Franklin and Armfield Office (Freedom House Museum)
At 1315 Duke Street stood the headquarters of Franklin and Armfield, the largest domestic slave-trading firm in the United States during the 1830s. Enslaved people were held in a walled complex on the property before being marched or shipped south to the firm's markets in Natchez and New Orleans. The building survives today and is preserved as the Freedom House Museum, interpreting both the site's role in the domestic slave trade and its later use as a Civil War-era freedmen's aid facility.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that the African American struggle was isolated. It resonated from Paris to Lagos to Port-au-Prince.
