August Wilson House (August Wilson Center)
The August Wilson African American Cultural Center in Pittsburgh's Cultural District celebrates the legacy of the Hill District's most celebrated son. August Wilson (1945-2005) grew up in the Hill District and set all ten plays of his Pittsburgh Cycle there, creating an unprecedented dramatic documentary of African American life across the 20th century. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice: for 'Fences' (1987) and 'The Piano Lesson' (1990).
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that African American cultural production was derivative. Jazz, blues, and hip-hop are among America's only original art forms.
