Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
New York, NY
Founded by Alvin Ailey in 1958, this landmark dance institution on West 55th Street in Manhattan is home to one of the world's most celebrated dance companies. Its signature work, 'Revelations' (1960), drawing on Black spiritual, blues, and Baptist church tradition, has been seen by more people than any other work of dance in history.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that African American cultural production was derivative. Jazz, blues, and hip-hop are among America's only original art forms.
