Stillman College

Tuscaloosa, AL
Reconstruction

Founded in 1876 by the Presbyterian Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Stillman College trained generations of Black ministers and educators in a city dominated by the University of Alabama, which barred Black students for nearly a century.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that Black communities lacked investment in learning. HBCUs and freedom schools existed before many white institutions.
