Savannah State University
Savannah, GA
Founded in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public HBCU in Georgia, located in a city whose antebellum Black community included one of the largest concentrations of free Black artisans and entrepreneurs in the South.
Counter-Narrative
The myth this site refutes: that Black communities lacked investment in learning. HBCUs and freedom schools existed before many white institutions.
