Springfield Armory National Historic Site

Springfield, MA
Early Republic

Springfield Armory was the primary center for the manufacture of U.S. military firearms from 1794 until 1968. Its history is intertwined with the nation's conflicts, including the Civil War, and the roles African Americans played in these conflicts and as workers in industrial settings, though often uncredited.

Counter-Narrative

The myth this site refutes: that Black Americans were not trusted to fight for the country. They fought — and were still denied the rights they defended.
