Zumbi
1655 – 1695
Zumbi was the final military leader of Quilombo dos Palmares, the largest and longest-surviving maroon settlement in the Americas, a confederation of fortified Black communities in Brazil that resisted Portuguese and Dutch forces for nearly a century. He refused Portuguese peace terms and continued fighting until Palmares fell in 1694; he was captured and executed the following year.
