Historical Figure
Timothy Meaher
1812 – 1892
Timothy Meaher was a wealthy Mobile, Alabama businessman who, in 1860, illegally financed the voyage of the schooner Clotilda, smuggling 110 kidnapped West Africans into Mobile Bay more than fifty years after Congress banned the importation of enslaved people. Meaher was never successfully prosecuted for the crime despite it being widely known in Mobile at the time.
