Historical Figure

Peter Mott

1810 – 1881

Peter Mott was a free Black farmer and Sunday school superintendent at Mount Pisgah AME Church who, with his wife Elizabeth Ann Thomas Mott, used their home in the New Jersey settlement then known as Snow Hill as an active Underground Railroad station, sheltering freedom seekers heading north toward Haddonfield and Moorestown. The surrounding community he helped anchor eventually became Lawnside, the first independent, self-governing Black municipality north of the Mason-Dixon Line.
