Nanny of the Maroons

1686 – 1760

Nanny was a leader of the Windward Maroons in Jamaica's mountainous interior, escaped enslaved Africans who fought a decades-long guerrilla war against British colonial forces in the 18th century. Alongside her brothers, including Accompong, leader of the Leeward Maroons, she helped force the British into an unprecedented 1739 treaty guaranteeing Maroon freedom, land, and self-governance.
