Historical Figure

John Brown (Providence Merchant)

1736 – 1803

John Brown was a Providence, Rhode Island merchant, U.S. congressman, and founding benefactor of Brown University, for which he served as treasurer for 21 years. He was also an active slave trader who, in 1797, became the first American ever convicted under the federal Slave Trade Act of 1794, a conviction that did little to slow his continued involvement in the trade.
