Dutty Boukman
1800 – 1791
Dutty Boukman was a Vodou priest and enslaved leader in Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) who, on the night of August 14, 1791, led a ceremony at Bois Caïman at which enslaved leaders from across the Northern Plain are said to have sworn an oath to revolt against French colonial rule. Within days, the uprising he helped ignite grew into the Haitian Revolution.
