Historical Figure
Alfred Jackson
1812 – 1901
Alfred Jackson (c. 1812 – September 4, 1901) was an African American man born into slavery on the Hermitage plantation, where he served as a wagoner, carriage driver, and stableman for Andrew Jackson. After emancipation, he remained tied to the Hermitage as a tenant farmer and later became a caretaker and tour guide, using his extensive knowledge of the estate’s history to educate others. His longstanding presence at the Hermitage makes him a crucial figure in preserving the legacy of both the plantation and the lived experiences of its former enslaved people.
