Levi Coffin

1798 – 1877

A Quaker abolitionist known as "the President of the Underground Railroad," Levi Coffin and his wife Catharine sheltered an estimated 2,000 freedom seekers over roughly two decades, first from their home in Newport (now Fountain City), Indiana, and later from Cincinnati, Ohio. His 1876 memoir, "Reminiscences," remains one of the most detailed firsthand accounts of Underground Railroad operations ever published.
